DF1112 Commission by Reithya DF1112 Commission by Reithya
Edit: I added appropriate shading to this piece!

This is a commission for :icondragonfreak1112:

I really hope you like it! I had extra time to work on this on the plane and such and I had a lot of fun toying with shading, as you can see. :aww:

ALSO Soooo excited I got to play around with white lining on a black dragon :squee:
I've wanted to do that for my traditional art for as long as I can remember, and even though it's not QUITE the same as traditional, the desire did spark from there.

Okay, this is my first ever critique, so just go along with it.

So... to begin with, I'll start with the positives. These are...

Well, I really like how you did the dragon. The scaling looks really good, just as per normal. The way you used the white lines around each scales seems to give each scale a feeling of some depth, making it seem as if it was actually in 3D. The chest plate also great! They're all very evenly proportioned, and they have been coloured very well, as well as shaded in a good manner.I also like the way you did the wings. They do look very nice, and almost look like they're moving just that little bit.

Moving away from the dragon, I must say that the grass in the foreground does look so expertly done. The way that you made it resembles that of actual real grass so much, and the fact that its curved gives a sense of it actually blowing gently in a nice, night time breeze. The moon in the background also gives its fair share of good looking to the picture.

Now, I'm gonna move onto the negatives.

There only seems to be one negative that I can point out in this piece, and that would have to be the actual background. I mean... that one block, solid colour of blue seems to somewhat kill off all of the life within the picture. You managed to add all this detail to the pic, and then slap a solid background off. Maybe I'm being a little harsh, but... I feel that the background just really doesn't add to the picture at all, and it kinda drags the impact of it down a little. Maybe this is something you can go back to at one point to adjust maybe. That's the only negative I can think of right now...

So, overall, I think you've made a very good piece, but you just need to look at the background a little. And, as my first critique... I guess it went okay.

WOW! I'm seeing a whole lot of improvement in our gallery! This is a wonderful drawing and you always amae me with the amount of scales you put into your work! I always like black dragons and this one is no exception. The brushstrokes you used on the grass really works for grass. However I do believe the color of the sky is a bit loud for the image. Maybe if it was a darker blue it would seem more natural. The shading on the ground itself is nicely done and adds depth to the image. I think the reflecting lights on the wings could be refines a bit more because they look just likes dots to me. Adding veins and texture to the wings could also make it look more realistic. The claws and spikes on the back look really good but I'd refine the horns on it's head a little more. The center horn on its forehead looks a lightly thick for its placement and I'd make it a little thiner and make it look more like it's attached to the skull rather than just being placed on it. Over on the opposite wing there is a spot of blue above the dragon's back. By looking at the front wing it seems that that area would be part of the wing.

As a whole there are just some minimal changes I would make your drawing but the overall picture is a very strong visual. The detail is wonderful and I always enjoy seeing what new dragons you draw next! Keep up the good work!!
